Worship styles are a hot topic and have been for a long time. We have three basic choices to choose from, traditional, blended, and contemporary. When the topic is broached most people really are talking about music and not worship. Worship encompasses more than music. Prayer is worship, tithing is worship, testifying is worship, singing is worship, and proclaiming God’s Word is worship. So when we refer to worship as only music we are
doing an injustice to the God whom we worship.
For years the Body of Christ has been torn apart by what has been called ‘Worship Wars’ among other things. None of the variables that all the studies throw at us makes a difference in this phenomenon of the church. The problem does not reverberate from generational, economic, social, or regional demographics. These are areas that Satan would like for us to focus on which distracts us from the real source of the problem, which is pride and selfishness [James 4:1-3].
These divisions [Jude 18-19] have greatly hurt the testimony of Jesus Christ before a lost and unbelieving society. Instead of seeking unity, which is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work [Ephesians 4:1-3], most congregations have drawn tight parameters and refuse to venture outside of the lines. This is true on each side in the ‘war’ whether contemporary, blended or traditional.
No matter what demographic in which a person finds themselves they all expect one thing from the church of Jesus Christ. The lost world looks for and desires the church to be authentic [John 13:35]. We must ‘practice what we preach’ as people used to say [James 1:22-24]. So often we preach love and unity acting it out, but we don’t live it out. The Body of Christ must show authenticity in every area of life. The church is a congregation of born again believers who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit [Colossians 1:27]. If each believer is living a life filled [Ephesians 5:18] with and lead by the Holy Spirit [Galatians 5:16-25] then that local church will be Spirit filled and Spirit lead living and operating by faith. When this happens what the world reads about Christians and the church in scripture they will see lived out in daily life through the church of God. This then becomes authentic Christianity, authentic community, authentic confrontation, and an authentic church to a world which is hopeless and hurting.
Authentic Christianity is the draw to a lost and dying world. It spans all strata of humanity whether ethic, social, economic, educational, philosophical, or religious. We can offer the world anything else from a worldly atmosphere to hot dogs and a good time but only our spiritual integrity will impress them. We must stop living like we always have, and put on the new man in Jesus [Romans 13:14] through the power of the Holy Spirit [1 Thessalonians 1:5] and let God in all His Holiness be revealed [1 Corinthians 2:6-10] through the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
